Consumer Advice

Mannitol is a sugar alcohol about half as sweet as sugar. It is used as a sweetener, bulking agent and anti-caking agent in sugar-free candies, chewing gum and powdered foods, and helps keep powders free-flowing. It barely raises blood sugar, is plant-derived (made from fructose), and is safe at normal levels. Like all sugar alcohols, very large amounts at once can cause bloating or diarrhea, so sensitive individuals should be mindful.
