Consumer Advice

Magnesium stearate (INS 470, part of the salts of fatty acids group) is the magnesium salt of stearic acid, used as an anticaking agent and release agent to stop powders clumping and prevent sticking during production, commonly found in milk powder, powdered foods, flavours and tablets. The fatty acids may come from vegetable oil or animal fat. It is barely absorbed and is considered safe at the tiny amounts used; those avoiding animal-derived ingredients may want to check the source.
