Consumer Advice

Disodium inosinate (IMP) is the sodium salt of inosinic acid and one of the most common flavour enhancers. Combined with MSG it multiplies savoury umami, and it is widely used in instant noodles, soups, meat products and snacks. It breaks down into inosinic acid and sodium and is safe within limits. As it contains sodium, people watching their salt should count it, and those with high uric acid should avoid excess.
