In a nutshell

Lactic acid is a naturally fermented organic acid used for acidification, preservation and flavouring, safely metabolised.

Consumer Advice

Lactic acid occurs naturally in yoghurt, sauerkraut and human muscle and is a natural product of fermentation. It is used as an acidity regulator, preservative and flavour agent in yoghurt, drinks, sauces and pickled foods. Being a normal metabolic molecule, it is very safe at authorised levels. Despite its name, lactic acid does not acidify the blood and there is no reason to avoid it.
