What is it?
Sodium propyl para-hydroxybenzoate (INS 217) is the sodium salt of propylparaben with better water solubility, used as a paraben preservative in liquid/neutral systems; also subject to endocrine concerns and regional limits.
Source
Industrial:丙酯与氢氧化钠中和、干燥制得食品级钠盐
Why is it used?
- Antimicrobial (moulds, yeasts, some bacteria)
- Good water solubility for formulation
- Used in liquid and neutral foods
- Extends shelf life
- Synergistic with shorter-chain parabens
Common Foods
- Beverages
- Sauces
- Confectionery
- Some bakery
- Dairy products
Safety
ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake):0-10 mg/kg bw (as p-hydroxybenzoic acid, total parabens)
Concerns:
- 潜在内分泌干扰争议
- 部分法域限制或禁用
- 增加钠负荷
Usage Standard
China:GB 2760(按具体批准品种管理)
International:
- EU: 相关丙酯类自 2015 年起禁止作为食品防腐剂
- FDA 未普遍批准该钠盐为食品防腐剂
- Codex GSFA (INS 217)
- FSANZ Food Standards Code (Sodium propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, 217)
- 日本等部分国家允许使用
In a nutshell
Sodium propyl p-hydroxybenzoate is the water-soluble sodium paraben, with safety and restrictions equivalent to propylparaben.
Consumer Advice
Sodium propyl p-hydroxybenzoate is the sodium salt of propyl p-hydroxybenzoate; in China it is one of the few parabens still permitted under GB 2760, limited to specific foods such as soy sauce, vinegar and carbonated drinks with strict maximum levels. The EU no longer authorises any paraben for food. At permitted levels it is generally safe, although allergic reactions are possible in very rare cases. Choosing products from reputable brands is sufficient.
