Basic Information

FieldContent
Chinese namedioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate
English namedioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate
INS/E numberINS 480
Functional classEmulsifier
Year adopted1972
Approved byAustralia/New Zealand (FSANZ)

What is it?

Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate is an anionic surfactant produced by esterifying succinic acid with octanol, then sulphation and neutralisation. It is a wetting agent and emulsifier that sharply lowers surface tension, allowing dry, water-repellent materials to absorb water quickly.

Source

Industrial:琥珀酸与辛醇酯化生成二辛基琥珀酸酯,再经磺化、氢氧化钠中和成盐制得

Why is it used?

  • Acts as a wetting agent to rapidly rehydrate dry or hydrophobic ingredients
  • Functions as emulsifier and dispersant for powders in water
  • Helps evenly disperse water-insoluble colours and flavours
  • Improves wetting and penetration in fruit processing

Common Foods

  • Dehydrated fruits and vegetables
  • Instant beverage powders
  • Baking premixes
  • Dried fruits and preserves
  • Powdered flavour carriers

Safety

ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake):0-0.6 mg/kg bw

Concerns:

  • 高剂量可能刺激肠道
  • 仅限特定用途且残留量受限制

Usage Standard

China:GB 2760《食品安全国家标准 食品添加剂使用标准》

International:

  • EU Regulation 1333/2008 Annex II (E 480)
  • FDA 21 CFR 172.810
  • Codex GSFA (INS 480)

In a nutshell

Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate is a powerful wetting agent used only under strict limits to rehydrate dry food materials.

Consumer Advice

Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS) is a synthetic wetting agent and emulsifier used in very small amounts in powdered drinks, dairy products and confectionery to help powders dissolve quickly or improve dispersion. It has a JECFA acceptable daily intake and is considered safe at approved levels; because it slightly promotes water absorption, a very few sensitive people may notice mild stomach upset after large doses.
