Consumer Advice

Adipic acid is an organic acid used as an acidity regulator to give foods a clean, tart taste; it can be found in powdered drinks, jellies and chewing gum. It is usually produced synthetically and is allowed only in a limited range of foods with set limits. It is safe at normal intakes; some people simply find very acidic foods uncomfortable, which is a taste or tolerance matter rather than a toxicity concern.
