Consumer Advice

Silver (silver leaf or powder, E174) is approved in the European Union only for the external decoration of confectionery, such as decorative cakes and sugar-coated sweets; it is not approved in China or the United States. Metallic silver is barely absorbed in the digestive tract, so its use within the permitted scope is considered safe.
