Consumer Advice

Erythrosine is a synthetic iodine-containing red dye of the xanthene class, used mainly for cocktail cherries, cake decorations and biscuits. In the EU (E127) it is restricted to a few foods, and China permits it in some products within limits. Because it contains iodine, people with thyroid conditions should be mindful; the US restricts it because of thyroid-tumour findings in animal studies. It is generally considered safe within permitted limits.
